Senate Inquiry: Impact of Microplastics and other toxins to human health

Tuesday 10 March 2026

We see the impacts of emissions and plastics to be harmful to both our environment and human health. This submission outlines a case for human health to be considered as a reason to reduce the use of plastics and microplastics.

This submission responds to three key parts of the Senate Standing Committees on Community Affairs inquiry on the Impact of microplastics and other toxics on human health:

  • the effectiveness of any education or informative efforts to notify the public of potential harms and prevention opportunities
  • the potential benefits of a national standard for consumer products
  • protocols and policies of other countries which have proven to be effective.

Update: On 20th March 2026, CAHA President Dr Catherine Pendrey gave evidence at a public hearing into the Inquiry into the impacts of microplastics and other toxics on human health, alongside Genevieve Cowie, Leila Cusack and Kate Wylie.
