Work on the National Health and Climate Strategy kicks off

Friday 10 March 2023

Consultation on Australia’s first National Health and Climate Strategy has commenced to ensure our health system can meet the challenges of climate change.

Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ged Kearney and Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy Jenny McAllister will hold a roundtable today focussing on how the health system can adapt to a changing climate, as well steps the system can take to reduce emissions.

The Climate and Health Alliance, peak body for climate change and health, welcomes the leadership being shown by the federal government to address this important issue.

Mr Roland Sapsford, CEO of the Climate and Health Alliance

"Australia’s health sector has been united in calling for a national strategy for climate change and health for almost a decade.

"Seeing this work get underway is encouraging. We commend Ministers Kearney and McAllister for their leadership in bringing a cross portfolio approach to the development of the Strategy.

"The evidence tells us the pressure on health and health services from climate change are growing year on year. Urgent action to reduce emissions and build resilience will save lives; today’s roundtable is a good first step.

"CAHA will continue to work with the Ministers and relevant federal  departments to ensure this work unlocks the health benefits of climate action for all Australians."
