Scientists blast Morrison Government's stance on climate and energy policy

There's more pressure on the Morrison Government over its stance on climate and energy policy.

Twenty-two Australian scientists and health professionals, including former Australian of the Year Fiona Stanley and Nobel Laureate in medicine Peter Doherty, have urged the Federal Government to phase out coal fire power by 2050 in line with the recommendations of the latest UN climate report.

In a letter published today in the international medical journal Lancet, the scientists blast what they call the Federal Government's "contemptuous dismissal" of the findings of the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report saying it disregarded "any duty of care regarding the future wellbeing of Australians and our immediate neighbours".

Despite its loss in the Wentworth by-election, where climate change was a key issue, the government says its priority remains ensuring cheaper energy over any further cuts to carbon emissions.
